Talking Value of Money

Money matters to people of every age and at every stage of life. For today's teenagers, often labelled the 'I want it now' generation, it has never been more important. It's never too early for children to learn about the value of money and, more importantly, how to avoid getting into unmanageable debt.
Generation Z who are now at the age where they'll be starting to earn pocket money and exposed to credit, it really is crucial that parents raise their children's awareness about the basics of money management. Children need to understand that money is a limited resource and does not simply materialise from holes in the wall or by swiping a credit card. Parents cannot really be expected to provide a financial safety net in all situations.
Financial literacy skills should be at the forefront of knowledge for the next generation of consumers so that needs and wants are closely monitored and savings plans made and adhered to.

Mannatech Inc with founder Sam Caster has created a way which helps you build your dreams and future lifestyle through their business of glyconutrients. These products are essential to everyone for cell-to-cell communication giving optimal health and wellness. The opportunity of Mannatech is something purposeful and satisfying.

Disposable Versus Cloth

The wonder of ever evolving cloth nappies!
My three children had a successful babyhood living with ordinary terry toweling cloth nappies, with me using NapiSan and a bucket. Nappies soaked or dried overnight for the next day. Never used a dryer.
Today we can have a cotton nappy costing $22.00, organic cotton @ $24.50 or Bamboozie nappies @ $26.50 each. Wow! These Bamboozie are made from highly sustainable bamboo fibre. Then there is the biodegradable liners @ $18 for 200, reusable up to three times each.
Also, two sizes: up to 12 months and then 12 months to toilet-trained.
While disposable nappies clog landfill, release methane into the atmosphere and take aeons to break down, cloth nappies require water and energy for washing and often end up in the dryer.

Mannatech Inc with founder Sam Caster, have given children a great start by producing glyconutrient Manna-Bears. They feature the latest, technologically advanced, proprietary glyconutrient blend. They deliver beneficial glyconutrients and green tea powder.

The Clever Kids Lunchbox

Sandwiches at school can become boring! However we can make a great difference by varying sandwiches each day. Using different breads such as -
Rye, wholegrain, pita, turkish and white with added fibre.
Switch to bread rolls, bagels and wraps for extra variety.
Some children may like spicy chutney, relish or pickles besides the regular tomato sauce.
Make plain, ease-to-bake scones with the kids - It's important they learn how to prepare simple meals and snacks:
- Cheese sandwich
- Small apple
- Plain or date scone, with spread
- Salad vegetables - avocado, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, carrots and celery sticks.

Glyconutrients are essential for children. Mannatech Inc. with founder Sam Caster, have produced Manna-Bears that contain extracts of 12 nutritious dehydrated fruits and vegetables.
These delicious chewy pectin gums contain the goodness of green tea and patented Mannatech Inc. glyconutrients.

Cells and Ageing

Interesting excerpt from 'The Keys to Extraordinary Longevity' by Dr. J P Willem
'Aging may seem illusory given that according to the Chinese tradition, every seven years our cells are totally renewed. But the new cells receive information from those they replace. Although the cell is new, the information is retained and so our life does not start again from the beginning.
In addition, each day brings more erosion and we are like a cliff being worn away by the waves of the sea. Thus we can preserve our equilibrium, provided we do not suffer any serious attack, by declining imperceptibly yet with increased disorganisation.
The human body is considered as an automaton, living in a world that is sub-lit but receiving information from a world where there is true light, that is beyond the photon wall (speed of light 300,000 km/s). This information is received at the cerebral cortex, which translates it. If the cells are properly connected to the super-luminous world, the information is transmitted correctly, otherwise, errors occur. In fact, the healthy cells are mixed with the diseased ones, resulting in a general weakening, which is the sole means of creating a new equilibrium, vital but less healthy than before. .... '
Children of today have a greater chance now that Mannatech Inc. founder Sam Caster, have produced GlycoBears and ManaBears especially for children giving them the necessary cell renewal of good cells. Glyconutrients help the body to repair itself giving optimal health and wellness. Glyconutrients help the cells make healthy tissues to make healthy systems and bodies.

A Good Snacking Time

All children like snacking!
Snacking throughout the day assists in maintaining steady blood glucose levels between meals, which helps fight fatigue and improves concentration. Snack foods can provide up to one third of your daily kilojoule intake. So while the occasional indulgence is fine, aim to choose nutritious snacks most of the time for your children.
Variety is the Key to Acceptance - Look for snacks that provide carbohydrates for energy, such as bread, rolls, fruit buns, fresh fruit, low-fat yoghurt and wholegrain crackers. Foods high in fibre, low in saturated fat and salt, are good for digestion and heart health.
Diabetes is becoming a huge problem even with children and research shows low GI foods can have benefits for health in a number of ways:
- feel fuller for longer- As low GI foods help maintain steady blood glucose levels and help you feel more satisfied for longer after eating.
- maintain concentration levels - glucose is the only fuel used by the brain to carry out its daily functions. By keeping blood glucose levels steady, low GI foods provide a constant supply of energy to the brain, therefore helping maintain concentration levels throughout the day.
- low GI foods have been shown to help manage cholesterol and triglyceride levels, so they can be good for heart health even in children.
Mannatech Inc with Sam Caster, acknowledge the benefits of the Glycemic Index and advocate it along with their GlycoLean weight loss program. GlycoBears are the glyconutient product for children giving them a fantastic start to life. Glyconutrients are necessary for optimal health and wellness but are mostly missing from our diet.

Influence Your Child With Praise

An excerpt from "The Positive Power of Praising People" by Jerry D. Twentier.
'While each of us requires praise, children need it most. A two- or three-week-old infant will focus on her mother's face for that approving,k glowing expression. "A positive, smiling acceptance, the look that says 'I am lucky to have you' mirrors an infant's sense of self," states Dr. Bernice Berk, a New York psychologist, (Redbook, June 1984).
From birth to six years comprises the fastest term of growth in human development. At no other time will you exert greater influence on your child. Almost all of her later experiences will hinge on what happens now.
"Hey, watch me, Mummy! Daddy! Look at me!"
Manny times a day, busy parents hear this cry and stop to notice: "Aren't you a good soldier! ...a good baker! ... a good builder!"
The "watch me's" escalate as the child discovers new challenges, activities, and abilities.
The excited child with his "look-at-me" request conveys what each of us expresses - only he's too innocent to mask it! He openly asks someone to share the joy of his accomplishment!........ We can give our children too much of everything, except ourselves. .... For gifting him with the best quality advantage, there's no present like your time!'

Glyconutrients by Mannatech Inc. and Sam Caster, are also a wonderful gift for children. Mannatech has produced Glyco-Bears, glyconutrients for children giving them optimal health and well being.

Reading For Enjoyment

Most young children like to play with books - especially the ones where there are buttons to push and different noises are emitted. If you help them to realise early on that reading is an enjoyable thing to do, you can inspire a love of reading that will last a lifetime. As they get older some children are not so good at sitting down quietly looking at books. Here are some guides to helping through this stage:
1. Put special touchy-feely books in the cot to familiarise your baby with books. The colourful pictures will stimulate them.
2. Read to preschoolers regularly and they'll associate reading with pleasure - A special time each day.
3. Choose three books a day to keep preschooler interest high: a favourite book, a familiar book and one that's new.
4. Older children will sometimes want to read to you or tell the story - let them do that.
5. Don't nag them about reading.
6. Let children read what they like at home. Even if this means comic books, at least they're reading.
7. Read the books your children are studying for their schoolwork so you can discuss them together.
Glyconutrients can give superior health benefits for children having produced by Sam Caster and Mannatech Inc. Researchers have found children with attention difficulties have improved. Glyconutrients are necessary in every cell in your body producing optimal health and wellness.

A Ray of Hope

Taken in part from 'Breakthroughs in Health' Vol. 1 Issue 2 - 'A Ray of Hope' by Mike Fillon.
Glyconutrients are a great benefit for immediate and long-term sustainable support, also through creation of permaculture gardens, for these children and families.
'Famine is hard to comprehend when you live in a land of plenty. Your heart can break when you see emaciated children, and you can grow frustrated and feel helpless when you see people - especially children - literally wasting away from hunger and devastating diseases like AIDS.
There is a ray of hope. It's not a big one, but it's there.
In April 2006, the British medical journal The Lancet published a column by Rainer Gross, Ph. D., UNICEF'S chief of nutrition; and Patrick Webb, Ph.D., dean for academic affairs at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. It presented five surprising facts about severe childhood malnutrition.
As their fifth point, Gross and Webb state that the solution must tackle child wasting (childhood undernutrition) to have a lasting affect on human well-being. "The problem of wasting needs to be addressed wherever it is identified not just in emergencies," Webb says. "Wasting in emergencies represents the tip of the iceberg..... Gross and Webb give several examples of developments that will reduce the chronic undernutrition resulting in wasting of children. These include improving nutrition in pregnant and lactating women to prevent low-birth-weight infants, effective protection against infectious disease, improved water and sanitation systems, promoting breastfeeding for an infant's first six months, enhanced health and nutrition information for parents and micronutrient supplementation. "The wasted child cannot wait," conclude the authors.'
One of the solutions is giving these children Mannatech's technologically advanced glyconutrient supplements, which have been very successful. Within two weeks there has been a remarkable improvement; caregivers say that the new-found energy was amazing, after previously being weak and listless and non responsive the children who have had glyconutrient supplements, no longer lie down all day, but are now happy, playing and laughing.
Mannatech Inc. with Sam Caster as Chairman, through MannaRelief give Mannatech beneficial glyconutrient supplements to needy children worldwide.

Toxins - Breast Milk Threatened!

From item in 'Breakthroughs In Health' Vol 1 Issue 2
'Let's face it; we live in a toxic world. While links between pollution and diseases, including cancer and heart problems, are well-known and documented, some less-known pollutants may be causing free radical damage leading to a weakened immune system. This is especially true with chronic and autoimmune diseases in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. Deterioration of the body's cell-to-cell communication system is a cause for this weakening of our immune systems.....
If our immune systems are threatened by toxic substances, what about mothers who pass immunity to children through their breast milk? The importance of breast milk to growth and immune system development is well understood, and new research shows it offers additional benefits, especially for premature infants. A study appearing in the July 2006 issue of Pediatrics shows that the tiniest premature infants fed with breast milk in the hospital did better later in life on mental development tests than others fed formula only. The research is the first to show the benefits of breast milk for babies weighing less than 2 pounds, 3 ounces. According to co-author Dr. Betty Vohyr of Brown Medical School, for these infants, brain development that normally occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy, occurs in the hospital neonatal intensive care unit.....
Unfortunately, environmental toxins threaten the very source of immune system development. Pesticide exposure crosses the generations, according to a new University of Florida study that finds daughters of mothers who lived near areas with heavy agricultural spraying may be unable to nurse their children.....
The warning to mothers is well worth it. Pediatric experts concur on the vital role of breast-feeding policy states that human breast milk is "uniquely superior for infant feeding." earlier this year, the World Health Organization referred to breast-feeding as the biological norm for the first time....'

Mannatech Inc., the leader in glyconutrients, also provides antioxidants which support your body's natural ability to defend, protect and repair against stress and premature aging giving optimal health and well being.

Playing Under the Big Top

Found in Better Homes and Gardens - September 2002
Children love to have a secret place to be alone with their imaginations. We at our home had many places to build a cubby house, in the bush, under trees or down the next paddock. These days our privileged sons and daughters may have great nutrition aren't quite so lucky in this area.
However, 'We can create a colourful private retreat the kids will love......Having their own space is essential to children. But not many homes these days have enough room for the kids to have their own area indoors, or back gardens big enough for a cubby house.' You can make a portable tent, with a coordinating play mate, a fantastic idea.
It's a mini circus tent, and it's just the thing to keep the kids occupied for hours on end. Set up indoors if the weather is bad or move it outside in fine weather, suspended from a clothesline or tree branch. While the children may call it their very own 'big top', the quiet imaginative play this tent will generate may have you calling it 'the cone of silence'. Just....bliss.
Using a hula hoop, make a cone out of colourful material, which will hang down from a hook in the ceiling. Striped blue and white material attached by ties, hangs down from the hula hoop forming a cylinder which then forms a lovely secret place. Leave an opening in the material hanging down for the opening (door). A colourful round mat is on the floor under the tent and we have a place to hide. There can even be windows and roll-up blinds attached on the walls (striped material).

Children need plenty of creative ways for their imagination to explore their surroundings. Mannatech Inc. has produced glyconutrients to give opportunity for children to have plenty of energy and important vitamins and minerals. These Manna Bears, the children's glyconutrients, are made with natural gums and natural colours, containing no artificial preservatives.

Skin Problems in Children

By the way, have you noticed how many children have skin problems, dry skin, eczema, blotched skin. Recently there has been more evidence emerging linking the use of synthetic chemicals in ordinary household cleaning products to health problems such as asthma, eczema, dermatitis and other skin and health problems. Laundry powder is a good example, as chemical residues can stay in your clothes, underwear, sheets and towels, in other words up against your skin day and night. They can irritate your skin and even worse - they can be absorbed.
One ingredient to be aware of is optical brighteners. They make your clothes appear 'brighter and whiter' but don't actually make them cleaner. Optical brighteners can cause allergic reactions when they come in contact with skin that is then exposed to the sun. They have also been known to create bacterial mutations in fish when released into waterways.
Look for laundry powder that is organic, plant and mineral based with no harsh synthetic chemicals, so it's safer and healthier. They reduce the likelihood of allergies, rashes or skin irritation.

Glyconutrients from Mannatech Inc. in the form of PhytoBears and Manna Bears are chewable vitamin and mineral supplements with kid-approved natural flavours for health and well-being.

Give Children the Best Start in Life

Very interesting tit bit from 'Don't Worry Be Happy" by Greg Biddell.
Besides us all being more loving, compassionate and understanding in our family relationships and putting the other person first to help lessen stress, there is the question of nutrition

'According to early child development studies, babies are disadvantaged and are at risk in more ways than one, through mothers who experience high levels of stress and anxiety during their time of pregnancy. Intense anxiety is associated with problems such as premature birth and miscarriage, along with low birth weight and respiratory illness in newborn babies.
There are also links between excessive stress in mothers and physical defects in their children, such as cleft palates and pyloric stenosis, which is the tightening of the infant's stomach outlet.....
Stress and anxiety will automatically produce corresponding stimulant hormones that are released into the bloodstream. These hormones equip the body for impending action (flight or fight), by sending large amounts of blood into the areas of the body that are involved in defensive response, such as the brain and heart, as well as the muscles of the arms, legs and torso. Consequently the normal flow of blood to other organs, including the uterus, is greatly reduced, depriving the foetus of the full supply of oxygen and nutrients which are necessary for a baby's normal development.'

Mannatech's Inc scientists fully realise the great gap in the food we consume and nutrition. Doctors now know it is essential for us all to take supplements. However they must be natural. Glyconutrients produced by Mannatech Inc. are all proprietary and scientifically validated glyconutritional supplements and products for adults and children that address health and wellness issues, weight management and skin care.

Dishwasher Tablets - A Danger to Toddlers

Excerpt from 'Your Doctor' May 2006
'Health authorities in New Zealand have reported an alarming increase in serious injuries to young children who have accidentally consumed dishwasher detergents.
These products often contain highly alkaline corrosive agents which, when ingested, can cause serious, life-threatening damage to the mouth and upper digestive tract. Some children have required mechanical assistance with breathing or tracheotomy (surgery to keep the airways open). Some forms of detergent come in brightly coloured packaging, which will attract children, who may think they are sweets, according to experts.
The manufacturers are being encouraged to use child-proof packaging for dishwasher detergents, but it is important for parents to store these products where small children can't get at them. Under the kitchen sink is usually not a suitable place, as it's an easy place for toddlers to go exploring.'

Mannatech Inc. produces glyconutrients which are necessay for optimal health and well-being for all humans. Mannatech Inc also cared for children in producing the chewable vitamin and mineral supplements enhancing growth and nutrition. Mannatech's natural flavoured Manna-Bears are technologically advanced, proprietary glyconutritional blend. Mannatech also included the antioxidant green tea powder.

Diet Reduces Childhood Wheezing

Interesting article from Health News - Good Health News Magazine
We are all realising that vitamin C is certainly very good for stopping the common cold. 'Researchers from the University of Crete suggests that a diet high in nuts, grapes, oranges, apples, kiwi fruit and tomatoes may protect against wheezing and other asthma-like symptoms. The anti-oxidants and polyphenols in these foods are thought to be responsible. The study found that children who ate nuts at least three times a week were 46 per cent less likely to wheeze. Eating a Mediterranean-style diet has also been linked to a 66 percent reduction in skin allergies.
Millions of people and their physicians are discovering, the greatest of all doctors is Mother Nature's most remarkable healing nutrients. Natural plant based supplements can help you relieve and reverse a vast array of conditions, from arthritis to angina, from children's skin diseases to yeast infections.'

Glyconutrients are generally missing from our diet and Mannatech Inc. scientists have produced supplements giving the essential glyconutrients necessary for optimal health in children and adult humans. Mannatech's Manna-Bears contain natural flavours and are designed specifically for children, whose nutritional needs are very different from those of adults.

What is Coeliac disease?

Taken from 'Go" magazine by Margaret Sherry a naturopath.

Coeliac disease, barley, rye and oats, as well as many of the ingredients derived from these grains. CD damages the villi - tiny, hair-like projections that line the small intestine - and leads to inadequate absorption of nutrients from food. Eventually, this malabsorption can result in nutritional deficiencies. Since the immune system causes the damage, CD is therefore considered an autoimmune disorder. However, it is also classified as a disease of malabsorption because nutrients are not absorbed.

If left untreated, CD can increase the risk of malnutrition and other associated complications, especially in children.
- Stunted Growth
- Unexplained Anaemia
- Skin rashes such as dermatitis herpetiformis
- Osteoporosis
- Nutritional deficiencies.
- Behavioural changes
- Muscle cramps
- Seizures
- Missed menstrual periods ( due to excessive weight loss)
- Infertility and recurrent miscarriage
- Recurrent mouth ulcers
- Tooth discoloration or loss of enamel

CD can occur at any age, but symptoms won't appear until gluten is introduced into the diet. The length of time a baby is breastfed, the age when gluten-containing foods were introduced into the diet and the amount of gluten eaten are also thought to influence when and how CD appears.

Mannatech Inc in their early research on glyconutrients suggests that by adding glyconutrients to the diet human diet there is an increase for optimal health and wellbeing.

Children and Eye Health

Next to a big zit on your nose, sties and chalazia (pimples on your eyelid) are among the most distressing of blemishes. Like Pimples on your face, they show up at the most inconvenient times, making matters worse, they tend to hurt.

Sties form when an eyelash follicle gets infected, perhaps because you used a contaminated fingers, mascara brush or because dandruff-like scales have clogged the follicle. You'll see a red, painful swelling like a little boil on the edge of your eyelid around the base of your eyelash with white head of pus on the swelling.

Children have a hard time keeping little fingers away from their eyes at these times but at first sign of a sty, a warm damp flannel over the closed eyes for at least five minutes at a time, four times a day for two weeks, says Dr Monica L. Monica, an ophthalmologist.

Mannatech's cutting-edge scientists have products glyconutrients which are necessary sugars supporting the body's natural ability to reach optimum nutritional levels and play a role in enhancing quality of life and wellbeing.

Ancient Toothpaste

Taken from Creation Vol 26 No 3 2004 by David Catchpoole

An Egyptian toothpaste formula from the 4th century AD has been found in a collection of papyrus documents at the National Library in Vienna, Austria. In black ink made of soot and gum arabic mixed with water, an ancient Egyptian scribe has carefully written down a recipe 'for white and perfect teeth'. This makes it the world's oldest-known recipe of toothpaste. The formula, presented at a recent international dental congress, included mint, salt, grains, of pepper and -perhaps the most active component- dried iris flower. News of the ancient formula is said to have 'caused a sensation' among the dentists at the congress as only recent discoveries have been made. Finding beneficial properties of iris are effective agent against gum disease and not unpleasant to use.

Dr hermann Harrauer, who heads the papyrus collection at Austria's National Library and who discovered the long-lost recipe, explained '......The Egyptian scribe was maybe a monk. By the 4th century AD, Egypt had been Christianised and Christian monks were also physicians and this would fit in with what we know.'

For those who are used to thinking in evolutionary terms, i.e. who regard early man as 'primitive', such discoveries of the advanced level of technology in earlier cultures can often be a real eye-opener. Nobody in the dental profession had any idea that such an advanced toothpaste formula of this antiquity existed.

Glyconutrients, or plant-based 'health sugars', are a key factor in Mannatech's Inc. products giving optimal health and wellness in all areas.

For the Love of Bikes

Buying a bicycle for your child can be overwhelming. How often is the bike too big or too heavy? So many aspects to think of, so you need to arm yourself with information before you hit the shops to make a safe, practical choice. A child also needs plenty of energy and stamina through nutrients.

Firstly the correct size is essential as your child needs to be able to sit on the saddle with the balls of both feet on the ground, and reach the handlebars with slightly bent arms. The bike needs two braking systems, including a back-pedal brake. Check that the bike has a chain guard covering the chain wheel and upper run of the chain. Pedals need to have tread on both surfaces, and check to make sure the handle grips are secure.

Also we should take the bike for a test ride to ensure it's comfortable. Of course the right colour is a must for a child.

Mannatech products are at the cutting edge of nutritional science and have produced PhytoBears and GlycoBears giving children the added benefit of safety and effectiveness of vitamins and minerals and important phytochemicals.

Child Food Intolerances

Many of us no doubt know that adults have reflux and that it is most uncomfortable and not appreciated in our lifestyle. It must be very difficult in babies and young children. I know that my second child sicked up after every feed until he was six months when I stopped feeding him.

Food intolerances are tricky to diagnose and seeking the advice of an Accredited Practising Dietitian with an interest in allergies and intolerances is the best way to go. You will be put on a restricted diet ensuring that it meets nutritional needs, especially important for babies and young children.

One of the enemies is Amines - These nitrogen-containing compounds are formed by the breakdown or fermentation of protein. Cheese, yeast extracts such as Vegemite, beer, wine and chocolate are all rich in amines.
Salicylates are aspirin-like substances occurring naturally in fruit, vegetables, fruit juice, herbs, honey, jam, nuts, tea and coffee, and levels are highest in unripe fruit. They're also found in flavourings, such as peppermint.
Glutamate is an amino acid occurring naturally in foods such as yeast, tomatoes, mushrooms, vegetable and meat extracts, and some wines. It can also be found as part of MSG in savoury foods, such as packet soup, instant noodles and Asian sauces.
Sulfites were used in ancient times to preserve wine. Today, they are still used in wine, as well as in fruit juice and dried fruits to stop undesirable colour change.

Well, after that, what do we eat? I guess most people will have different requirements. However, here are some given suggestions:
Rice Bubbles with milk, plus a slice of white toast with marg and maple syrup (no jam or honey).
Plain biscuit or commercial fruit and rice dessert; water to drink
Chicken and leek soup, or steamed beef and vegetable rissoles; half a cup of milk; breastfeed before babes afternoon nap.
One pancake with homemade vanilla custard or plain yogurt; water to drink
Lamb fillet stew with pasta, or braised veal and mixed vegetable casserole. Small cup of milk; breastfeed before bed.

Sweet, Sweet Enough!

Not satisfied with the natural sweetness of food. We all seek out - and manufacturers willingly supplied - sweeteners. The 'added sugar' category of our diet has grown exponentially since the early 1900s - by more than 2,100%. Worst of all the sugars is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Relatively cheap and easy to use (thanks to its syrup form) HFCS accounts for more than 40% of all caloric sweeteners added to foods and beverages.

'There's no question that rise in HFCS consumption has paralleled a rise in both obesity and diabetes,' says physician Gross, who authored the study linking HFCS to diabetes. 'A relatively new body of evidence points to the potential negative health consequences of consuming HFCS.' One possible link between HFCS, obesity, and diabetes is the way our bodies process fructose.

As your body's energy needs are met, insulin triggers cells to produce leptin, a hormone that signals fullness. The problem with fructose is that it doesn't stimulate insulin to the same degree that other sugars do, which means that the body doesn't release leptin.

'Leptin controls our sensitivity to fullness,' says Peter J. Havel, Ph.D., a research at the University of California, Davis, who has done crucial work in examining fructose's relationship to weight gain. 'The more fructose in a meal, the less insulin you'll secrete,' he adds. Heart disease is also a potential concern. As Havel points out, fructose seems to drive up the levels of blood fats called triglycerides, a risk factor for heart disease.......

GlycoScience is designed to provide information on nutritional saccharides - glyconutritionals - that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech, providing optimal health and wellbeing.

Swifts and Jet Fighters

Excerpt from Creation - Vol. 29 N o. 1 'The Design of Swifts and Jet Fighters' by Dr Jonathan Sarfati.

Bird aerobatics have fascinated bird watchers since the beginning. Bird design has inspired the designers of flying machines for over a century. Yet still there are new discoveries about their intricate engineering, suggesting that we still have much to learn.

God revealed that He created flying creatures on Day 5 of Creation week, the day before He created land creatures and man. However, progressive creationists deny this and believe that land reptiles came before birds, and evolutionists believe that birds evolved from reptiles.

Evolution-promoters seem not to understand how flight works, and how it needs so many things arranged in the right order....... Skeptics also ignore the amazing feather. The feather is an aerodynamic marvel that's strong and lightweight, and completely different from a reptile scale. But feathers are not the sorts of structures that would be useful on limbs that flap at a prey animal, since they would be damaged by the pounding.

The purpose of the wings is to force air backwards and downwards so the bird is propelled forwards and kept aloft. So wings should form a wide surface that has high air resistance, so it can move large volumes of air. But for limbs designed to grab forward at prey, it's an advantage to have a surface that has low air resistance i.e. lets air through easily.

A recent study on swifts shows that there is even more to flight than downward deflection of air. They also make use of a leading-edge vortex to generate even more lift, so that 'the current understanding of how birds fly must be revised'. The bird wing actually has two parts: the inner arm wing and an outer hand wing. The arm wing deflects air downwards just like an airplane wing.

This is a giant study and children would be itching to understand. Amazing how children mostly try to fly like superman by jumping off fences or whatever.

Mannatech's scientists have produced GlycoBears for children giving them the essential nutrients for health and wellbeing.

Performing Surgery Upon Evolutionary Thinking

Jonathan Sarfati interviews pediatric surgeon Dr Ross Pettigrew, 'Creation' magazine June-Aug 2007.

Ross Pettigrew trained in Christchurch, NZ. His career includes Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago (New Zealand) School of Medicine and consultant surgeon at Dunedin Hospital, researching surgical nutrition and surgical audit. He is responsible for most of the pediatric surgery at Dunedin Hospital, which includes operation on newborn babies. Dr Pettigrew is still a clinical lecturer at the University of Otago, and has a private practice, operating at Mercy Hospital in Dunedin.

Surgeon Dr Pettigrew has long had an interest in faith and science issues: 'My interest in biological matters goes back to school days, with the stories of the "Jungle Doctor". I was brought up in a Christian home, coming to faith at age seven and believing that God created this fascinating world we enjoy.'

But what about evolution teaching? Dr Pettigrew encountered it very early, and first thought that compromise was the answer: 'Like many in the 60s, my faith was assaulted by the uninhibited teaching at school that evolution was a proven fact. In seeking to find a compromise with what my teachers were saying and the first few chapters of Genesis, I found a book which seemed to be the answer. It was called Creation's Amazing Architect and I studied how in six days of creation could be fitted into the "facts" of evolution.

However, as soon as he reached university, he found that this compromise solved nothing:
'My first day at University, pursuing a medical school entry, was quite a shock. My lecturer in biology walked in with a Bible under his arm. He opened it as Genesis chapter 1 and proceeded to demolish any hope of a compromise. "The birds are out of order", he proclaimed. The sun was formed after the plants which needed the sun for photosynthesis,l and on it went.'

So, like many people on the fence, Dr Pettigrew found that the position was unstable and would tip one way or the other. Fortunately, like Joshua he chose to follow God's Word. 'I was stunned, I had to make a choice......

Francis Bacon (1561-1626), the Christian who is regarded as the 'father of the scientific method', famously said, 'A little philosophy inclineth man's minds about to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds to religion.' Ross found in his own field a parallel to this saying, as he relates: 'As I advanced in my medical career, I began to see a number of areas where the theories of clinicians were being contradicted by the facts. In my surgical training, I continued to marvel at the human body. The more I studied, the more I was convinced that this was not a chance happening but designed by someone of far greater intelligence'

Dr Pettigrew continues to talk about science versus evolution giving detailed description. An example is the thymus........ 'This sits behind the breast bone in the upper chest. It was known to be relatively large and active in babies and children, but shrunk as one got older. It was removed for many reasons and considered To be redundant and an evolutionary vestige. That was until the understanding of the immunological system in the 1950s and 60s. It was found that this gland is essential to program certain blood cells (called T lymphocytes) to attack foreign tissue which is critical in babies. Children born without this gland succumb to infection and die very quickly without treatment. As our knowledge advances, we have found that many of the "redundant" organs with no "obvious" function, including the appendix, actually are very important.'

Dr Pettigrew states, 'My focus as a surgeon has changed over the years......I continue to be in awe of the intricate design and incredible repair mechanisms built into the human body.'

Aussie Kids are Fat and Anxious

Article from: Aussie kids are fat and anxious - By Susie O'Brien

'New morbidity' as kids' health problems change
Kids more likely to need mental help than physical
Waiting lists of up to five months

OBESITY, anxiety and depression have replaced measles and mumps as the most common childhood illnesses, doctors report. In what is dubbed the "new morbidity", Australian children are now more likely to see a doctor for mental health, sleep and weight problems and behavioural disorders rather than broken bones or infectious diseases. And many more children, including babies and toddlers, are presenting to doctors with a multitude of conditions. Figures compiled by the Centre for Child and Community Health for the Herald Sun show:

· One in five school-age children has behavioural problems.
· One in five babies has crying problems and almost half have sleep problems.
· One in 100 toddlers/pre-schoolers has autism or some autistic disorder.
· One in four toddlers/pre-schoolers has more than one behavioural problem.
. One in four adolescents is obese.

However, waiting lists for specialised treatment at public hospitals can be up to five months. And private clinics, where waiting lists are just a few weeks, can leave parents $100 a visit out of pocket. Dr Harriet Hiscock, a pediatrician and senior research fellow from the Centre for Community Child Health, said medicine had been "very good at treating common childhood diseases". "There used to be wards full of measles, mumps and rubella, but largely through antibiotics we've gotten rid of a lot of infectious diseases," she said. "Instead, now we are treating a lot of things such as obesity, allergies, depression, sleep problems and anxiety that have mostly always been there but we are much more aware of these days.

Children Eating Right

The Energy Boost They Need!

Choosing the right foods is important for children of all ages, especially for weight management. As obesity in children is readily in the news of late, getting the right food plan is essential.
Mannatech recommends a low-glycemic food plan for all.

Low-glycemic foods do not trigger the undesirable insulin reaction that shuts down the normal process by which the body converts fat as energy. Every person should clearly understand the role of fats and proteins. Proteins provide the basic building blocks of life, called amino acids. Without these, you could not exist. Glyconutrients combine with protein amino acids to produce the complete glycoproteins your body needs for optimal health.

Animal proteins are very high in amino acids, vitamins and minerals because herbivores (exclusively plant eaters) that are the source for the meats people eat are designed to get all the nutrients they need from vegetable or plant matter, and then store it in their muscles. Herbivore muscle tissue, meat, contains calcium and other vital minerals because muscles can't function without calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, as well as B vitamins. This explains why meat contains B12 and why many human vegetarians become B12 deficient. without calcium, you will not only have weak bones, but also muscle cramps.

Some vegetables contain proteins, as do grains, nuts and seeds. Vegetables alone, however, must be properly combined for you to derive the protein value you need since no individual vegetable provides complete protein amino acid balance by itself. The human body require proteins to maintain health muscle mass and continuous energy, as well as normal blood sugar.

Children also need the right eating plan for growth. Mannatech has produced Glyco-Bears which are great-tasting, chewable multivitamins formulated especially for children. These sucrose- and dextrose-free treats contain 26 essential vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients in a base made from 30 different fruits and vegetables.

Our Kids - Accident Prone?

Adapted from "Harrison's Alive" booklet

Children are accident prone - some more than other. Our busy streets pose a hazzard as well as backyard cricket, riding bikes, skate board riding and many other ways create opportunities for accidents resulting in breakages or wounds to their little bodies.

With a new wound, the most important thing is to clean and examine it closely as soon as possible. If it is a minor wound, you can provide the care yourself.
Medical attention is necessary when something more severe has happened.
Urgent medical attention should be sort if the would has exposed fatty layer, white tissue or muscle or any of the following:

If it causes severe pain or numbness below the wound.
If it is a puncture, whether the object is removed or still impaled.
If there is a gaping wound that may require stitches.
It has visible foreign materials; dirt, gravel etc.
It has blood spurting from it or the bleeding doesn't stop after applying direct pressure for five minutes.

One of the most common misconceptions is that wound needs to be left open to dry. This is not recommended as you would run the risk of further injuring the wound and bacterial infection. Modern wound dressings allow wounds to breathe and are designed to be left on for a few days. A dressing also protects the wound from further damage due to friction or infection. The maintenance of moist environment has been shown to encourage cell growth. However, if it is wet rather than moist, there is an increased risk of maceration.

A sign of infection is heat or soreness and medical attention should be sort. It is also a sign that the wound needs a new dressing, as well as if it leaks. If it becomes wet it should be changed to prevent contamination.

Always make sure hands are clean before bandaging and keep dressings untouched before use.

Why Fizzy Drink Drains You Dry

Soft drink is not good for you. Of course, you have probably suspected this, but perhaps you don't know the extent to which drinking carbonated, caffeinated, sugared, or artificially sweetened beverages destroys your body. If you look at the list of ingredients in most soda pops, you will likely see most or all of these listed:
caffeine
carbonated water
phosphoric acid
sugar
aspartame
acesulfame-k
sucralose
Let's start with carbonated water. As you know, our bodies require oxygen to remain healthy. For every can of carbonated soda ingested, the amount of oxygen in the blood is decreased by 25% for up to three hours. If you are drinking several sodas per day, you are depriving yourself for a significant amount of oxygen. Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus must be maintained in the proper balance for bone health. When too much phosphorus is in the blood, calcium is leached from the bones, causing osteoporosis. Even in citrus sodas which contain citric acid instead of phosphoric acid, calcium is needed to normalize blood pH. It has been said that the fastest growing group of people with osteoporosis in this country is teenagers....because of the huge number of sodas they consume. As far as caffeine and sugar are concerned, they both cause dehydration, and the massive depletion of minerals. A study was done in which two groups of children aged 13-18 years of age were given one of two drinks, a caffeinated sugar-free drink, or a drink containing both caffeine and sugar. When caffeine was added, calcium excretion in the urine increased by 25%. When sugar was added, urinary calcium loss almost doubled

(1). Both caffeine and sugar also cause dehydration. Sugar in particular is destructive because its ingestion lowers immune function by reducing the ability of white blood cells to ingest and destroy bacteria. This lowered immune function can last for five hours or more after the ingestions of sugar
(2).Sucralose, also marketed as Splenda, breaks down into small amounts of 1,6 -dichlorofructose, a chemical similar to chlorinated pesticides. There has not been adequate testing of this product before it was released for fidyl public use, and many of the post-approval studies are alarming. To ready about it, go to Sucralose Toxicity Information Center. Aspartame, or Nutra Sweet, has an alarming health record. Read my article about Aspartame . Even though this article is about how aspartame poisons the pregnant woman and her unborn child, you can see how it would do similar things in the bodies of others. Also, see the Aspartame (Nutra Sweet) Toxicity Info Center .Acesulfame-k is a dangerous chemical. Read Sample Quotes from Cancer Experts' Letters on Acesulfame Testing .I hope you will consider giving up the drinking of soda pop. It would contribute significantly to your level of wellness, and probably help reverse many existing health problems.
Everyone knows the week after Halloween is hell week at school right? From what?

Wake Up, Wake Up!

How long do you expect to live?
Let's set aside the quality of life for a moment and consider how the US compares with all the other industrialized nations in the world when it comes to life expectancy and health care. One of the primary ways to evaluate a nation's health-care system is to look at the death rate of that country.
In 1950 the US ranked seventh among the top twenty-one industrialized nations of the world.
In 1998 we spent more than $1 trillion on health care, averaging 13.6% of our gross national product. More than twice as much as the next closest nation.
In 1990 we ranked eighteenth in life expectancy when compared to the same twenty-one industrialized nation forty years prior.
In spite of the billions of dollars Americans spend onb health care, we are now considered one of the worst industrialized nation in the world when it comes to life expectancy.
The health-care system we claim is the best in the world is actually near the worst when we look at how long Americans live or don't live.
Now envisage what your last twenty years will look like.
Are you getting your money's worth?

Our children of this nation expect and deserve better than they are receiving at this time.

Superior Anti-Oxidants

*Ten Times Superior

A new generation of Anti-Oxidants has recently been developed that contains MTech AO Blend that is literally TEN TIMES superior to the average anti-oxidant product on the market and THREE TIMES more potent than the closest competitor per unit per gram of antioxidant activity!

*The Test

Virtually every known antioxidant product was tested for actual anti-oxidant activity˜in fact 90 of them (70 were from retail and 20 from MLM companies) using ORAC-O.

*5674 ORAC-O Units

The TOP antioxidant product („Super Antioxidant Formula‰) tested at 5674 units (in thousands) per gram using the ORAC-O test for water and fat soluble antioxidant activity.
Vitamin C is a common and powerful antioxidant. Ester C was ranked #11 at 3363 units of antioxidant activity. Three other Vitamin C products ranked at #4, #8 and #9 at 5337, 4017 and 3389 units of antioxidant activity. Green Tea ranked #18 at 2206 units of antioxidant activity.

*17,254 ORAC-O Units

In sharp contrast, MTech AO Blend, contained in AmbrotoseAO, tested at 17,254 units of antioxidant activity, ranking it as the number one tested (ORAC-O) product in the world.

*5 Foods = 13% Increase

How well does it work in your body? The US government recently released results of a study that found that eating five daily servings of the five foods highest in antioxidant activity raised antioxidants levels in the blood by 13%.

*2 Capsules = 37% Increase

In dramatic contrast, just TWO capsules a day of Mannatech's new Ambrotose AO antioxidant product raised antioxidant levels in the blood by 37%!
At a fraction of the cost of eating five servings of vegetables a day, two capsules delivered almost TRIPLE the benefit!

*Defend-Protect-Repair

Of course no product can directly cure, mitigate or prevent any disease. But what antioxidants do is support your body‚s natural ability to defend, protect and repair against stress and premature aging. So why not empower YOUR body to defend, protect and repair?

Complexity of Sugars

Upstream Glycomics - By Erika Jonietz- October 2001

One reason that sugar biology, or glycobiology, has lagged behind the study of genes and proteins is that, until very recently, researchers lacked effective tools for studying carbohydrate molecules. Part of the problem is the complexity of sugars. While DNA and proteins have essentially linear sequences, sugars branch; DNA has just four basic building blocks and proteins have 20, but sugars have more than 30. "We truly haven't cracked the code yet," says MIT glycobiologist Ram Sasisekharan. "We are just beginning to unravel the mysteries of sugars."
Indeed, Sasisekharan's lab developed the first practical method for sequencing sugars only two years ago. And MIT chemist Peter H. Seeberger demonstrated the first automated machine for sugar synthesis in February. Just as the invention of the automated DNA sequencer and synthesizer in the mid-1980s opened up the field of genomics, the availability of such tools is heating up glycomics. Knowledge of sugars' functions could affect medicine far beyond improving drug doses and fighting cancer. Researchers are looking into how sugars influence the development of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and infectious diseases like AIDS and herpes, to name a few. Sugars also seem poised to influence stem cell biology, organ transplantation and tissue engineering. If these promising areas of research prove successful, "sugar pills" will take on a whole new meaning.

Glyconutrients early research suggests an increase in production cell reconstruction.

Obesity in Children

Prof Booth said the study found 15 per cent of children had elevated insulin levels, which was the first step to type two diabetes.

It equated to 77,000 NSW teenagers - almost enough to fill Sydney's Olympic stadium - who had elevated insulin levels, he said.

And almost 10 per cent of the 15-year-old boys and five per cent of girls had liver damage because they were overweight.

"Around 20 per cent of our boys have high blood pressure," he said.

"It's a frightening story.

"These are the kinds of figures we'd expect to see among 40-year-olds."

His study confirmed about one in four Australian children was overweight or obese, with the prevalence peaking at 30 per cent among grade four children.

This compared with about one in 10 children in 1985, and one in five in 1997.

Pediatric Soy Protein Formula Policy

Australian Pediatric Soy Protein Formula Policy
Policy Statement of Royal College of Australian Physicians
The lack of a suitable diagnostic test for food intolerance has allowed for an exaggeration of the incidence and a tendency for over-diagnosis. The true incidence of milk intolerance in our community is difficult to ascertain but a reasonable working figure would be 2.0% (1).
The number of infants on soy formula outweighs this figure as soy formula accounts for approximately 10% of formula sales in Australia.
There is no evidence that soy formulas are nutritionally better than cow's milk formula for normal infants. The assumption that symptomatic infants who improve on soy formula are therefore intolerant of milk protein is addressed in this statement (2).
There are several well-characterized disorders caused by cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI), including cow's milk allergy, cow's milk enteropathy and cow's milk colitis. There is also a range of vague signs and symptoms ascribed to CMPI, which includes excessive crying, vomiting, wind, colic, vague ill health, and tension-fatigue syndrome (3).
With the latter symptoms, there is usually no evidence of associated chronic diarrhea or growth failure. Of concern, is that many of these latter symptoms may be the result of parent-child relationship problems, which are inappropriate to treat with soy formula. Controlled trials of cow's milk and soy formulae in colicky infants have not demonstrated a benefit from soy formula (4).
The rationale for the use of soy formula is the assumption that soy protein is less antigenic than cow's milk protein and thus should be used in the treatment of CMPI, or prophylactically in patients at high risk for developing CMPI.
Soy protein can cause intolerance reactions with gastrointestinal symptoms as well as acute anaphylaxis and up to 40% of infants intolerant of cow's milk also develop soy protein intolerance (6).

Medicine, Morals and Money

Alarm bells are ringing in the offices of the editors of the world’s leading medical journals. The editors of The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and the Canadian Medical Association Journal, to name just a few, have now gone public with their concerns, in a remarkable joint statement.

The gist of their warning: the values of the marketplace are corroding and corrupting the foundational values of medical science. Scientists are supposed to be impartial and objective, but as the journal Nature recognizes [editorial, 23rd August, 2001]: "There are circumstances in which selection of evidence, interpretation of results or emphasis of presentation might be inadvertently or even deliberately biased by a researcher’s other interests."

The editor of The Lancet, goes even further. In a remarkably candid public statement he declares that "nine out of ten papers" submitted to his journal, concerned with new drugs, are found by independent reviewers to be "deliberately skewed in favour of the new products being studied."

The major culprit? Evidence is accumulating [See, e.g., New England Journal of Medicine, 1998: 338: 101-6] that research which is funded by the pharmaceutical industry tends significantly to overstate the benefits and to understate the potential harm of new drugs. The major victim? Patients. Because patient health and safety is put at serious risk when clinical trials are not fairly designed or the resulting data are not accurately presented and analysed.

The Canadian public depends heavily on our university faculties of medicine and hospital research centres to tell us whether the new drugs they are testing are safe and effective. Deplorably, Canadian governments have been unwilling to fund adequately the necessary research effort.

Stem Cells and Glyconutrients

Highlights of last Saturday's call – STEM CELLS & GLYCONUTRIENTS: Dr. Reg McDaniel talked about first seeing new stem cells in the peripheral blood of clients using glyconutrients many years ago and not recognizing these cells as stem cells. They were 10 times the size of white blood cells and they were given the name "Gee" cells for some time as that's what Dr. Reg said when he observed these new cells that no one could identify! Now we have the tools to identify these cells appropriately as stem cells which can be used as "master keys" to move to places in the body as the body calls for. About a year ago there was an article in JAMA regarding the stem cells implants of male cells into female bodies of women with leukemia who had received a stem cell transplant. When these women died, male marked cells were found as neurons in the brain.

Reg realized that this might offer an explanation in the many children with fetal alcohol syndrome that were doing so well with the glyconutrients and others who had advanced so far beyond their perceived genetic limitations. He told the story of several adopted aboriginal children in Canada who had fetal alcohol syndrome who have done remarkably well, improving from IQ's estimated to be around 50 to levels around 100. One girl who had difficulties with reading and numbers and was in remedial classes after 3 years with glyconutrients was able to read a Harry Potter book in a week and discuss what she had read. When they measure the before and after stem cell counts in the blood, virtually none are detectable prior to glyconutrieints. Within a week of giving glyconutrients, there are 200-400 stem cells seen in a microliter of blood with about 5-10 thousand white blood cells. If one extrapolates to the whole body, it is possible that there are 1.7-3 trillion new stem cells throughout our body as we add in glyconutrients. We're at the beginning of understanding all of what is possible with stem cells.

Glyconutrient Information

Arabinogalactan is a highly branched polysaccharide consisting of a galactan backbone with side chains of galactose and arabinose sugars. Larch Arabinogalactan has several interesting properties, which appear to make it an ideal adjunctive supplement to consider in cancer protocols. Experimental studies have indicated Larch Arabinogalactan can stimulate natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity, enhance other functional aspects of the immune system, and inhibit the metastasis of tumor cells to the liver. The immune enhancing properties also suggest an array of clinical uses, both in preventive medicine, due to its ability to build a more responsive immune system, and in clinical medicine, as a therapeutic agent in conditions associated with lowered immune function, decreased NK activity, or chronic viral infection.Aloe Vera 200:1 The proprietary Aloe blend used in meets or exceeds the standards established by the International Aloe Science Councils' (IASC) Certification Program for the determination of purity, but more importantly, guarantees the retention of biological activity through a unique, patent pending manufacturing process. Additionally, "shifting" the higher molecular weight polysaccharides into the range discovered to be the Highly Active Fraction, has enhanced the efficacy provided by Nature. Through this patent pending process, the Aloe Vera used in can claim the retention of this fraction and, thereby consistently guarantee the retention of biological activity - not simply the "chemistry" of Aloe Vera. Because the temperature during processing is kept below 99 degrees Fahrenheit, the long polysaccharide chains remain intact, as they are found in nature. This low-heat process is successful in retaining a broad spectrum of polysaccharide chains (mannan molecules) which are the hardest to preserve. A chromatography study shows the concentration of polysaccharide chains ranges in size approximately 12,000 daltons to over 2,000,000 daltons. Saccharides found in Aloe include arabinose, galactose, galacturonic acid, mannose, rhamnose and xylose.Fenugreek has been used for centuries by practitioners of Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Research in the past two decades has shown that fenugreek seeds may help balance blood sugar in diabetics, and may also have beneficial effects on triglycerides.

Death in the US

Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US,
Causing 250,000 Deaths Every Year

Original article can be found at: http://www.mercola.com/2000/jul/30/doctors_death.htm

This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm.
This information is a follow-up of the Institute of Medicine report which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR:
12,000 -----unnecessary surgery 8
7,000 -----medication errors in hospitals 9
20,000 ----other errors in hospitals 10
80,000 ----infections in hospitals 10
106,000 ---non-error, negative effects of drugs 2
These total to 250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!!
What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment.

Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers:

First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients.
Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort
Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report.1 If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease).
Another analysis 11 concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with:
116 million extra physician visits
77 million extra prescriptions
17 million emergency department visits
8 million hospitalizations
3 million long-term admissions
199,000 additional deaths

Glycontrients greatly benefit general wellbeing.

Cell Science Saluted

TAYLOR PRIZE SALUTES CELL SCIENCE By Peter Geigen-Miller London Free Press November 6, 2000
The three newest winners of the of the J. Allyn Taylor prize in medicine work in an area of cell science that holds promise for breakthrough treatments of cancer, heart disease and other serious diseases.
The prestigious international prizes, awarded annually by the John P. Robarts Research Institute in London, honor major achievements, in areas of research in which Robarts scientists also are working.
This year's winners are Tony Hunter, a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, Anthony Pawson, a professor at the University of Toronto, and Joseph Schlessinger, professor and chairperson of pharmacology at New York University Medical Center in New York.
The three scientists have won renown for their pioneering work an the field of signal transduction - how information is relayed within and between cells. Malfunctions in this communications process have been linked to cancer, diseases of the heart and circulation system, diabetes, neurological and immune system disorders and other serious ailments.
Scientists are working to understand how normal cell signaling works and how abnormal signals lead to disease. The three Taylor winners are credited with major advances in the field, arriving at similar understandings by different routes.
Knowing how the processes work will allow researchers to develop new drugs and treatments to repair faulty signals. Some new drugs could be on the market by 2003, Schlessinger said. Down the road is the promise of new therapies that could extend the lives of some cancer patients to 15 or 20 years from the two years or less allowed by today's treatments, he said.
The Taylor prizes, which come with a $10,000 cheque for each of the winners, a Taylor medallion and a certificate of merit, were presented last night during a dinner at the Great Hall in Somerville House on the University of Western Ontario campus.

Preservative increases risk of autism and hyperactivity, U.S. study says
Sharon Kirkey
CanWest News Service
Thursday, February 05, 2004

OTTAWA - After assuring parents that additives in vaccines don't cause brain damage, scientists have found what they believe could be a "smoking gun" linking these additives to autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.
In a study published online today, two months ahead of its scheduled release in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, U.S. researchers have discovered an apparent link between thimerosal, a controversial mercury-based preservative once commonly used in childhood vaccines, to an increased risk of neurological disorders such as autism and ADHD.
While most vaccines used in Canada have been thimerosal-free since the early 1960s, the preservative was used in the annual flu shot doctors recommended this year for even healthy children.
In tests on human brain cells, researchers found two natural chemicals -- one compound that stimulates cell growth and dopamine, which transmits nerve signals -- are both key to a process in the brain called methylation. Methylation helps DNA work properly and is crucial to the normal development of the brain. The team found thimerosal, ethanol, and the metals lead and mercury, all interfere with methylation.
What's more, researchers found that thimerosal interfered with methylation even at doses 100 times lower than a child would receive after a shot with a vaccine containing the preservative.
"It was by far the most potent," says investigator Richard Deth, a professor of pharmacology at Northeastern University in Boston.
He said the study, which also involved researchers from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Nebraska and Tufts University in Boston, could account for the rising rates of autism since the early 1980s, when more thimerosal-containing shots were added to a child's vaccine schedule.
A recent review of vaccine-related "adverse events" in the U.S. found a "significant correlation" between shots containing thimerosal and autism, the researchers report.
In a press release, the journal said the new study is "the first to offer an explanation for possible causes of two increasingly common childhood neurological disorders." Glyconutritionals may help with children's health
