Toxins - Breast Milk Threatened!

From item in 'Breakthroughs In Health' Vol 1 Issue 2
'Let's face it; we live in a toxic world. While links between pollution and diseases, including cancer and heart problems, are well-known and documented, some less-known pollutants may be causing free radical damage leading to a weakened immune system. This is especially true with chronic and autoimmune diseases in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. Deterioration of the body's cell-to-cell communication system is a cause for this weakening of our immune systems.....
If our immune systems are threatened by toxic substances, what about mothers who pass immunity to children through their breast milk? The importance of breast milk to growth and immune system development is well understood, and new research shows it offers additional benefits, especially for premature infants. A study appearing in the July 2006 issue of Pediatrics shows that the tiniest premature infants fed with breast milk in the hospital did better later in life on mental development tests than others fed formula only. The research is the first to show the benefits of breast milk for babies weighing less than 2 pounds, 3 ounces. According to co-author Dr. Betty Vohyr of Brown Medical School, for these infants, brain development that normally occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy, occurs in the hospital neonatal intensive care unit.....
Unfortunately, environmental toxins threaten the very source of immune system development. Pesticide exposure crosses the generations, according to a new University of Florida study that finds daughters of mothers who lived near areas with heavy agricultural spraying may be unable to nurse their children.....
The warning to mothers is well worth it. Pediatric experts concur on the vital role of breast-feeding policy states that human breast milk is "uniquely superior for infant feeding." earlier this year, the World Health Organization referred to breast-feeding as the biological norm for the first time....'
