Buying a bicycle for your child can be overwhelming. How often is the bike too big or too heavy? So many aspects to think of, so you need to arm yourself with information before you hit the shops to make a safe, practical choice. A child also needs plenty of energy and stamina through nutrients.
Firstly the correct size is essential as your child needs to be able to sit on the saddle with the balls of both feet on the ground, and reach the handlebars with slightly bent arms. The bike needs two braking systems, including a back-pedal brake. Check that the bike has a chain guard covering the chain wheel and upper run of the chain. Pedals need to have tread on both surfaces, and check to make sure the handle grips are secure.
Also we should take the bike for a test ride to ensure it's comfortable. Of course the right colour is a must for a child.

You will be put on a restricted diet ensuring that it meets nutritional needs, especially important for babies and young children.
One of the enemies is Amines - These nitrogen-containing compounds are formed by the breakdown or fermentation of protein. Cheese, yeast extracts such as Vegemite, beer, wine and chocolate are all rich in amines.
Salicylates are aspirin-like substances occurring naturally in fruit, vegetables, fruit juice, herbs, honey, jam, nuts, tea and coffee, and levels are highest in unripe fruit. They're also found in flavourings, such as peppermint.
Glutamate is an amino acid occurring naturally in foods such as yeast, tomatoes, mushrooms, vegetable and meat extracts, and some wines. It can also be found as part of MSG in savoury foods, such as packet soup, instant noodles and Asian sauces.
Sulfites were used in ancient times to preserve wine. Today, they are still used in wine, as well as in fruit juice and dried fruits to stop undesirable colour change.
Well, after that, what do we eat? I guess most people will have different requirements. However, here are some given suggestions:
Rice Bubbles with milk, plus a slice of white toast with marg and maple syrup (no jam or honey).
Plain biscuit or commercial fruit and rice dessert; water to drink
Chicken and leek soup, or steamed beef and vegetable rissoles; half a cup of milk; breastfeed before babes afternoon nap.
One pancake with homemade vanilla custard or plain yogurt; water to drink
Lamb fillet stew with pasta, or braised veal and mixed vegetable casserole. Small cup of milk; breastfeed before bed.

Sweet, Sweet Enough!
Not satisfied with the natural sweetness of food. We all seek out - and manufacturers willingly supplied - sweeteners. The 'added sugar' category of our diet has grown exponentially since the early 1900s - by more than 2,100%. Worst of all the sugars is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Relatively cheap and easy to use (thanks to its syrup form) HFCS accounts for more than 40% of all caloric sweeteners added to foods and beverages.
'There's no question that rise in HFCS consumption has paralleled a rise in both obesity and diabetes,' says physician Gross, who authored the study linking HFCS to diabetes. 'A relatively new body of evidence points to the potential negative health consequences of consuming HFCS.' One possible link between HFCS, obesity, and diabetes is the way our bodies process fructose.
As your body's energy needs are met, insulin triggers cells to produce leptin, a hormone that signals fullness. The problem with fructose is that it doesn't stimulate insulin to the same degree that other sugars do, which means that the body doesn't release leptin.
'Leptin controls our sensitivity to fullness,' says Peter J. Havel, Ph.D., a research at the University of California, Davis, who has done crucial work in examining fructose's relationship to weight gain. 'The more fructose in a meal, the less insulin you'll secrete,' he adds. Heart disease is also a potential concern. As Havel points out, fructose seems to drive up the levels of blood fats called triglycerides, a risk factor for heart disease.......

Swifts and Jet Fighters

Bird aerobatics have fascinated bird watchers since the beginning. Bird design has inspired the designers of flying machines for over a century. Yet still there are new discoveries about their intricate engineering, suggesting that we still have much to learn.
God revealed that He created flying creatures on Day 5 of Creation week, the day before He created land creatures and man. However, progressive creationists deny this and believe that land reptiles came before birds, and evolutionists believe that birds evolved from reptiles.
Evolution-promoters seem not to understand how flight works, and how it needs so many things arranged in the right order....... Skeptics also ignore the amazing feather. The feather is an aerodynamic marvel that's strong and lightweight, and completely different from a reptile scale. But feathers are not the sorts of structures that would be useful on limbs that flap at a prey animal, since they would be damaged by the pounding.
The purpose of the wings is to force air backwards and downwards so the bird is propelled forwards and kept aloft. So wings should form a wide surface that has high air resistance, so it can move large volumes of air. But for limbs designed to grab forward at prey, it's an advantage to have a surface that has low air resistance i.e. lets air through easily.
A recent study on swifts shows that there is even more to flight than downward deflection of air. They also make use of a leading-edge vortex to generate even more lift, so that 'the current understanding of how birds fly must be revised'. The bird wing actually has two parts: the inner arm wing and an outer hand wing. The arm wing deflects air downwards just like an airplane wing.
This is a giant study and children would be itching to understand. Amazing how children mostly try to fly like superman by jumping off fences or whatever.

Performing Surgery Upon Evolutionary Thinking
Jonathan Sarfati interviews pediatric surgeon Dr Ross Pettigrew, 'Creation' magazine June-Aug 2007.
Ross Pettigrew trained in Christchurch, NZ. His career includes Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago (New Zealand) School of Medicine and consultant surgeon at Dunedin Hospital, researching surgical nutrition and surgical audit. He is responsible for most of the pediatric surgery at Dunedin Hospital, which includes operation on newborn babies. Dr Pettigrew is still a clinical lecturer at the University of Otago, and has a private practice, operating at Mercy Hospital in Dunedin.
Surgeon Dr Pettigrew has long had an interest in faith and science issues: 'My interest in biological matters goes back to school days, with the stories of the "Jungle Doctor". I was brought up in a Christian home, coming to faith at age seven and believing that God created this fascinating world we enjoy.'
But what about evolution teaching? Dr Pettigrew encountered it very early, and first thought that compromise was the answer: 'Like many in the 60s, my faith was assaulted by the uninhibited teaching at school that evolution was a proven fact. In seeking to find a compromise with what my teachers were saying and the first few chapters of Genesis, I found a book which seemed to be the answer. It was called Creation's Amazing Architect and I studied how in six days of creation could be fitted into the "facts" of evolution.
However, as soon as he reached university, he found that this compromise solved nothing:
'My first day at University, pursuing a medical school entry, was quite a shock. My lecturer in biology walked in with a Bible under his arm. He opened it as Genesis chapter 1 and proceeded to demolish any hope of a compromise. "The birds are out of order", he proclaimed. The sun was formed after the plants which needed the sun for photosynthesis,l and on it went.'
So, like many people on the fence, Dr Pettigrew found that the position was unstable and would tip one way or the other. Fortunately, like Joshua he chose to follow God's Word. 'I was stunned, I had to make a choice......
Francis Bacon (1561-1626), the Christian who is regarded as the 'father of the scientific method', famously said, 'A little philosophy inclineth man's minds about to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds to religion.' Ross found in his own field a parallel to this saying, as he relates: 'As I advanced in my medical career, I began to see a number of areas where the theories of clinicians were being contradicted by the facts. In my surgical training, I continued to marvel at the human body. The more I studied, the more I was convinced that this was not a chance happening but designed by someone of far greater intelligence'
Dr Pettigrew continues to talk about science versus evolution giving detailed description. An example is the thymus........ 'This sits behind the breast bone in the upper chest. It was known to be relatively large and active in babies and children, but shrunk as one got older. It was removed for many reasons and considered To be redundant and an evolutionary vestige. That was until the understanding of the immunological system in the 1950s and 60s. It was found that this gland is essential to program certain blood cells (called T lymphocytes) to attack foreign tissue which is critical in babies. Children born without this gland succumb to infection and die very quickly without treatment. As our knowledge advances, we have found that many of the "redundant" organs with no "obvious" function, including the appendix, actually are very important.'
Dr Pettigrew states, 'My focus as a surgeon has changed over the years......I continue to be in awe of the intricate design and incredible repair mechanisms built into the human body.'

OBESITY, anxiety and depression have replaced measles and mumps as the most common childhood illnesses, doctors report. In what is dubbed the "new morbidity", Australian children are now more likely to see a doctor for mental health, sleep and weight problems and behavioural disorders rather than broken bones or infectious diseases. And many more children, including babies and toddlers, are presenting to doctors with a multitude of conditions. Figures compiled by the Centre for Child and Community Health for the Herald Sun show:
· One in five school-age children has behavioural problems.
· One in five babies has crying problems and almost half have sleep problems.
· One in 100 toddlers/pre-schoolers has autism or some autistic disorder.
· One in four toddlers/pre-schoolers has more than one behavioural problem.
. One in four adolescents is obese.
However, waiting lists for specialised treatment at public hospitals can be up to five months. And private clinics, where waiting lists are just a few weeks, can leave parents $100 a visit out of pocket. Dr Harriet Hiscock, a pediatrician and senior research fellow from the Centre for Community Child Health, said medicine had been "very good at treating common childhood diseases". "There used to be wards full of measles, mumps and rubella, but largely through antibiotics we've gotten rid of a lot of infectious diseases," she said. "Instead, now we are treating a lot of things such as obesity, allergies, depression, sleep problems and anxiety that have mostly always been there but we are much more aware of these days.
