Children Eating Right
Choosing the right foods is important for children of all ages, especially for weight management. As obesity in children is readily in the news of late, getting the right food plan is essential.

Our Kids - Accident Prone?
Children are accident prone - some more than other. Our busy streets pose a hazzard as well as backyard cricket, riding bikes, skate board riding and many other ways create opportunities for accidents resulting in breakages or wounds to their little bodies.
With a new wound, the most important thing is to clean and examine it closely as soon as possible. If it is a minor wound, you can provide the care yourself.
Medical attention is necessary when something more severe has happened.
Urgent medical attention should be sort if the would has exposed fatty layer, white tissue or muscle or any of the following:
If it causes severe pain or numbness below the wound.
If it is a puncture, whether the object is removed or still impaled.
If there is a gaping wound that may require stitches.
It has visible foreign materials; dirt, gravel etc.
It has blood spurting from it or the bleeding doesn't stop after applying direct pressure for five minutes.
One of the most common misconceptions is that wound needs to be left open to dry. This is not recommended as you would run the risk of further injuring the wound and bacterial infection. Modern wound dressings allow wounds to breathe and are designed to be left on for a few days. A dressing also protects the wound from further damage due to friction or infection. The maintenance of moist environment has been shown to encourage cell growth. However, if it is wet rather than moist, there is an increased risk of maceration.
A sign of infection is heat or soreness and medical attention should be sort. It is also a sign that the wound needs a new dressing, as well as if it leaks. If it becomes wet it should be changed to prevent contamination.
Always make sure hands are clean before bandaging and keep dressings untouched before use.

Complexity of Sugars
One reason that sugar biology, or glycobiology, has lagged behind the study of genes and proteins is that, until very recently, researchers lacked effective tools for studying carbohydrate molecules. His study confirmed about one in four Australian children was overweight or obese, with the prevalence peaking at 30 per cent among grade four children.
This compared with about one in 10 children in 1985, and one in five in 1997.

The lack of a suitable diagnostic test for food intolerance has allowed for an exaggeration of the incidence and a tendency for over-diagnosis. The true incidence of milk intolerance in our community is difficult to ascertain but a reasonable working figure would be 2.0% (1).
The number of infants on soy formula outweighs this figure as soy formula accounts for approximately 10% of formula sales in Australia.
There is no evidence that soy formulas are nutritionally better than cow's milk formula for normal infants. The assumption that symptomatic infants who improve on soy formula are therefore intolerant of milk protein is addressed in this statement (2).
There are several well-characterized disorders caused by cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI), including cow's milk allergy, cow's milk enteropathy and cow's milk colitis. There is also a range of vague signs and symptoms ascribed to CMPI, which includes excessive crying, vomiting, wind, colic, vague ill health, and tension-fatigue syndrome (3).
With the latter symptoms, there is usually no evidence of associated chronic diarrhea or growth failure. Of concern, is that many of these latter symptoms may be the result of parent-child relationship problems, which are inappropriate to treat with soy formula. Controlled trials of cow's milk and soy formulae in colicky infants have not demonstrated a benefit from soy formula (4).
The rationale for the use of soy formula is the assumption that soy protein is less antigenic than cow's milk protein and thus should be used in the treatment of CMPI, or prophylactically in patients at high risk for developing CMPI.
Soy protein can cause intolerance reactions with gastrointestinal symptoms as well as acute anaphylaxis and up to 40% of infants intolerant of cow's milk also develop soy protein intolerance (6).

The gist of their warning: the values of the marketplace are corroding and corrupting the foundational values of medical science. Scientists are supposed to be impartial and objective, but as the journal Nature recognizes [editorial, 23rd August, 2001]: "There are circumstances in which selection of evidence, interpretation of results or emphasis of presentation might be inadvertently or even deliberately biased by a researcher’s other interests."
The editor of The Lancet, goes even further. In a remarkably candid public statement he declares that "nine out of ten papers" submitted to his journal, concerned with new drugs, are found by independent reviewers to be "deliberately skewed in favour of the new products being studied."
The major culprit? Evidence is accumulating [See, e.g., New England Journal of Medicine, 1998: 338: 101-6] that research which is funded by the pharmaceutical industry tends significantly to overstate the benefits and to understate the potential harm of new drugs. The major victim? Patients. Because patient health and safety is put at serious risk when clinical trials are not fairly designed or the resulting data are not accurately presented and analysed.
The Canadian public depends heavily on our university faculties of medicine and hospital research centres to tell us whether the new drugs they are testing are safe and effective. Deplorably, Canadian governments have been unwilling to fund adequately the necessary research effort.

This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm.
This information is a follow-up of the Institute of Medicine report which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.
The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment.
Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers:
First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients.
Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort
Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report.1 If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease).
Another analysis 11 concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with:
116 million extra physician visits
77 million extra prescriptions
17 million emergency department visits
8 million hospitalizations
3 million long-term admissions
199,000 additional deaths

The three newest winners of the of the J. Allyn Taylor prize in medicine work in an area of cell science that holds promise for breakthrough treatments of cancer, heart disease and other serious diseases.
The prestigious international prizes, awarded annually by the John P. Robarts Research Institute in London, honor major achievements, in areas of research in which Robarts scientists also are working.
This year's winners are Tony Hunter, a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, Anthony Pawson, a professor at the University of Toronto, and Joseph Schlessinger, professor and chairperson of pharmacology at New York University Medical Center in New York.
The three scientists have won renown for their pioneering work an the field of signal transduction - how information is relayed within and between cells. Malfunctions in this communications process have been linked to cancer, diseases of the heart and circulation system, diabetes, neurological and immune system disorders and other serious ailments.
Scientists are working to understand how normal cell signaling works and how abnormal signals lead to disease. The three Taylor winners are credited with major advances in the field, arriving at similar understandings by different routes.
Knowing how the processes work will allow researchers to develop new drugs and treatments to repair faulty signals. Some new drugs could be on the market by 2003, Schlessinger said. Down the road is the promise of new therapies that could extend the lives of some cancer patients to 15 or 20 years from the two years or less allowed by today's treatments, he said.
The Taylor prizes, which come with a $10,000 cheque for each of the winners, a Taylor medallion and a certificate of merit, were presented last night during a dinner at the Great Hall in Somerville House on the University of Western Ontario campus.

OTTAWA - After assuring parents that additives in vaccines don't cause brain damage, scientists have found what they believe could be a "smoking gun" linking these additives to autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.
In a study published online today, two months ahead of its scheduled release in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, U.S. researchers have discovered an apparent link between thimerosal, a controversial mercury-based preservative once commonly used in childhood vaccines, to an increased risk of neurological disorders such as autism and ADHD.
While most vaccines used in Canada have been thimerosal-free since the early 1960s, the preservative was used in the annual flu shot doctors recommended this year for even healthy children.
In tests on human brain cells, researchers found two natural chemicals -- one compound that stimulates cell growth and dopamine, which transmits nerve signals -- are both key to a process in the brain called methylation. Methylation helps DNA work properly and is crucial to the normal development of the brain. The team found thimerosal, ethanol, and the metals lead and mercury, all interfere with methylation.
What's more, researchers found that thimerosal interfered with methylation even at doses 100 times lower than a child would receive after a shot with a vaccine containing the preservative.
"It was by far the most potent," says investigator Richard Deth, a professor of pharmacology at Northeastern University in Boston.
He said the study, which also involved researchers from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Nebraska and Tufts University in Boston, could account for the rising rates of autism since the early 1980s, when more thimerosal-containing shots were added to a child's vaccine schedule.
A recent review of vaccine-related "adverse events" in the U.S. found a "significant correlation" between shots containing thimerosal and autism, the researchers report.
In a press release, the journal said the new study is "the first to offer an explanation for possible causes of two increasingly common childhood neurological disorders." Glyconutritionals may help with children's health
